Driven: 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Offers Brains AND Brawn

All Silverado HD trims come standard with a 6.6-liter gasoline V8 engine producing 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. For 2024, the gas V8 now sends its power through a 10-speed transmission, not a six-speed. A 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 is available for roughly $9,500, upping the output to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft. It’s a beast of an engine, providing effortless acceleration with buttery-smooth shifts from the well-tuned transmission.

The Duramax is the preferred option for towing, maxing out at 22,500 lbs on the 2500 HD (Regular Cab, Long Bed, WT, 2WD). A Silverado 3500 HD with a dually can tow up to 36,000 pounds. The Ford Super Duty can tow more, but the Silverado is still impressive.

Our tester was equipped with the Z71 Off-Road & Protection Package, a $1,165 option that adds unique suspension tuning with twin-tube shocks, skid plates, hill descent control, badging, floor mats, and a bed liner. The performance-only stuff is also available for just $525, making it a great option for owners who plan to do any amount of light off-roading.
