Mitsubishi’s latest take on electric trucks aligns with Nissan, a major stakeholder in the Renault-Mitsubishi-Nissan Alliance, and the new Triton is definitively based on the global market Nissan Navara. We can assume that Mitsubishi and Nissan are co-developing the midsize truck platform to cut costs – the main point of the expansive collaboration between three global brands.
As confirmed to CarBuzz in May, Nissan is also considering the hybrid route for its trucks through its e-Power technology available in other vehicles in select Asian markets. There’s one reservation, however: towing capabilities.
“One of the things [we consider] is that e-Power is not the best solution for towing. It’s very good for cargo loading, the same as an EV. But when it comes to towing, it’s not the best… yet. We’re working on that,” said Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s senior vice president for global product planning and program management.
Whether the upcoming hybrid and/or electric trucks will have the same towing capabilities as their ICE predecessors will be another story for another time.
