BMW has developed a pre-gearing stage for the electric motor that allows the 206 lb-ft of torque to be increased to 332 lb-ft at the transmission input. The automaker says it can boost torque in a way usually only possible with a larger electric drive unit.
The 5 Series PHEV models utilize a 19.4 kWh (usable) lithium-ion battery that has been cleverly positioned within the underbody. Not only does this lower the center of gravity – improving handling and dynamics – but it also benefits the trunk space. There are 18.4 cubic feet of packing space up for grabs, which is more than enough for most.
Mini will also use the event to publically unveil the new Mini Cooper and Countryman, completely new models designed as EVs from the ground up. BMW will also take the opportunity to showcase its varied range of electric vehicles, including the i4 Gran Coupe, the iX SUV, and the iX1 crossover, which isn’t sold in the United States.
