The automotive landscape has just become a little less cheerful thanks to the departure of the Volkswagen Up! city car. According to Autocar, the final example has rolled off the Volkswagen Group’s Bratislava factory floor in the Slovakian capital after 12 years in production.
When it was launched, the tiny city car cost the equivalent of just over $10,000, making it immensely popular among youths and those who wished to dodge European inner-city emissions charges. It was light, frugal, easy to park, and entertaining enough if you were willing to indulge in a little bit of trail braking mixed with lift-off oversteer.
But now it’s gone, closing yet another avenue of small car ownership.
