Sold in most parts of the world, Toyota has taken to making the Hilux a guinea pig of sorts for its alternative propulsion solutions. While this EV variant is more mainstream, the company is currently working with a consortium in the UK to build a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux that will hopefully prove the technology’s viability in commercial vehicles.
As for how this BEV test went, Toyota is pretty mum on the details. The showcase invited several large-volume Hilux customers and other clients to put the vehicle through its paces on a predetermined course. Looking at the vehicle it’s obvious this is a pretty basic work truck meant for mostly paved roads and city driving, and the company expressly points out it is a city-focused Hilux BEV and not something that would compete with the likes of a Rivian R1T offroad… for now.
Additionally, It seems this is the only prototype currently in existence, so this must have been a nerve-wracking endeavor for Toyota. Fortunately, it appears to have worked out in its favor, and those who drove the prototype reacted positively.
