An electric coupe may not please purists, but, as Espinosa explains, the company would use this to lure younger customers into the Nissan fold. Previously, Nissan had teased us with a small sports coupe in the form of the IDx and IDx Nismo concepts, but these never went beyond the concept phase. Something compact and affordable with sleek styling and respectable performance could be just what the brand needs, especially as it enters the electric era with gusto.
“I think car manufacturers – in general – have forgotten about the passion for cars. It depends on the country, but you can see that young customers are less and less attracted to cars,” he added. Sadly, there’s a lot of truth in Espinosa’s words. All over the world – and particularly in Europe – younger consumers are less interested in owning a car for several reasons. This concerns affordability, convenient public transport infrastructure, or environmental beliefs.
But a well-priced electric sports car could change the minds of some customers. “This is one of the things that can make the flame come back again,” he said.
