The BMW XM may be a surprise inclusion at face value, but hear us out. In developing its first standalone M car in decades, BMW failed to produce the kind of product that the M division is so hallowed for, but it did make a car that provides a level of luxury and wonder that helps justify the SUV’s six-figure asking price.
The exterior design is perhaps more discomforting than suggestive of luxury, but the cabin is the exact opposite. The materials and styling of everything inside the XM put one in mind of a concept car, and their construction has resulted in some of the comfiest rear seats our butts have ever had the privilege of being perched on.
Thanks to a plug-in hybrid powertrain, there’s a usable amount of electric driving range, but what really sold the XM in this category is that it offers a unique yet luxurious experience that few rivals can match. A worthy contender, indeed.
