To put this lap into context, we need to take a closer look at the Fiorano track. As you might know, Enzo Ferrari was all about racing, and he had Fiorano installed 51 years ago. It’s a 1.862-mile FIA Grade 1T circuit, and Ferrari uses it to develop road cars and the F1 cars that will compete in Las Vegas this weekend.
We tracked down some previous records, and they make for great reading. The fastest lap set by a Ferrari LaFerrari is 1:19.709. The 812 Competizione we mentioned earlier set a time of 1:20.008. The current hybrid V6 296 GTB gets around Fiorano almost exactly a second later than the V12-powered Competizione. To give you an idea of Ferrari’s rapid progress, the Ferrari 458 Speciale set a time of 1:23.50, while an F40 can only get around in 1:29.60.
And what about the all-time record? Well, it’s pretty obvious since the track is used to develop F1 cars, but perhaps unsurprisingly, it doesn’t belong to a modern F1 car. The immortal Michael Schumacher still holds the record with a 0:55.999 time set in a Ferrari F2004.
