Porsche Testing Hybrid V4 Engine In New 911

There are a few options. On the one hand, the V4 might be used in a motorsport application and is merely undergoing early testing. Or, it could end up in a special series model – either track-only or low-volume roadgoing model – as a send-off to the combustion 718. Some might think a 900-hp hybrid powertrain would work as a replacement for the Porsche 918 Spyder, but the brand has already confirmed the Mission X concept is a production intent hyper-EV that will arrive later this decade to replace the 918.

Of course, the potential still exists for the 911 to adopt this powertrain for its next generation. Porsche may be investing wholeheartedly in e-fuels to keep the combustion 911 alive, but a smaller engine with a hybrid system would be cleaner and greener and allow the automaker to meet more stringent legislation.

Porsche recently patented pneumatic valve spring technology that may also be employed here, which could see the V4’s 9,000 rpm rev ceiling lifted even higher. For now, little is known, but as soon as we find out more, you will too.
