As we mentioned at the beginning, the GR Supra is the cheapest car by a significant margin. Still, it’s the only model that can’t drop its top, and if that matters to you, it rules the Toyota out. There’s something to be said for dropping the roof and listening to that six-cylinder howl. Yes, the turbochargers somewhat sedate the noise, but it can still growl with the best.
The Z4 gives you all the pantomime, but the latest generation has focused more on driver comfort than track-ready handling. BMW says the manual will get a model-specific suspension tune, and we’re willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
For us, the Porsche is right out. A Boxster with a turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine is just wrong. Yes, it’s potent and handles beautifully, but you’ll inevitably cross paths with a Boxster equipped with that glorious 4.0-liter NA flat-six and hate yourself for not saving just a little bit longer.
Each of these cars has an obvious downside, but judged on fun alone, the win goes to the GR Supra. That being said, we’d love to experience the Z4 with the chassis updates to see if BMW finally turned its roadster into a proper Boxster rival.
Ultimately, enthusiasts win purely by having this much choice available, though.
