Toyota says the inflatable bladder is detachable, which means it can be used as an impromptu mattress on camping trips. “The bladder can also be removed from the underside of the truck bed cover to provide a mattress, such as for a tent or for the bed deck of the truck bed,” reads the patent.
That may appeal to adventure-minded individuals, but it’s a very niche product that would appeal to a small group. Besides, most camping enthusiasts tend to own the necessary accessories and often have overlanding vehicles equipped with the essential tools and paraphernalia.
It’s certainly an interesting idea, but one we fear may not see the light of day (like many patents). Perhaps it could work as a Toyota accessory. That way, Toyota can offer it to consumers who want it and not just add it to the Tacoma and Tundra options list.
