When the Bugatti Veyron debuted in 2005, it introduced the term “hypercar” into the lexicon of millions of people. It was a technological marvel that could achieve speeds upwards of 250 mph, and that was just the first in a long line of absurd specs that made many enthusiast heads spin.
One that doesn’t get the same attention today as it did back then is the Veyron’s curb weight, coming in at 4,167 pounds. At the time, this was extremely excessive for any kind of supercar. A Ferrari 430 weighed roughly 1,000 lbs less, and even the 2005 to 2006 Ford GT with its pickup truck engine weighed 3,485 lbs.
Since then, every car, from the Ford Mustang to the Toyota Tacoma, has grown in size and weight with electrification usually the main culprit. We wanted to highlight some surprisingly heavy vehicles you can buy today, and we’ve specifically given a wide range of sedans, crossovers, roadsters, and more to give you a better idea of how fat cars have become.
If the model in question was available in 2005, we included that curb weight as well to give you an even clearer comparison.
