Ares Modena Turns A BMW Z4 Into An Italian Classic

Just one month after transforming the Corvette into a bonafide Italian supercar, coachbuilder Ares Modena has announced a new car called the Wami Lalique Spyder. The design harkens back to roadsters from the 1950s and ’60s, specifically the Ferrari 250 GT California and Maserati A6GCS Frua. It’s tough to tell from the exterior, but the underpinnings are far less exotic: a BMW Z4 E85 generation (built from 2002 to 2008).

Ares Modena clearly wasn’t prioritizing performance here, using a stock 3.0-liter M54 inline-six engine producing 231 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. As further evidence that the Wami Lalique Spyder was built as a cruiser and not a track weapon, it’s equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, not a manual.

The body is made from handcrafted carbon fiber with extensive use of chrome on the exhaust, bumpers, and wire wheels. Ares Modena extended the overall length by around 14 inches but kept the Z4’s 98-inch wheelbase. Buyers can choose from four colors, including Amalfi red, Mediterranean Blue, a creamy white, and an unspecified fourth hue.
