“Electric vehicles will achieve mass adoption when they offer enough range that people will feel comfortable having an EV as their only vehicle. The Gemini battery has proven it can double the range of EVs and break down the biggest barrier to electrification,” said CEO & founder of ONE, Mujeeb Ijaz.
Aside from the range benefits, the Gemini battery also requires fewer raw materials than a regular EV battery. It needs less nickel and cobalt, cuts lithium by 20%, and reduces graphite by 60%. According to the Michigan-based company, it’s also the “longest-range EV battery pack that fits in the typical 300-400 liter space available in a vehicle for energy storage.”
ONE and the BMW Group agreed to fit the Gemini batteries to the iX SUV. With this successful implementation and demonstration, the energy firm will make additional refinements and improve the setup for commercialization. It’s unclear whether BMW will adopt future electric vehicles, though.
