The new Twingo will be 50% more affordable to manufacture than a compact SUV. A significant reduction in production costs stems from a software-driven platform that requires fewer materials. Renault hasn’t shared any range or battery size details, but the Boulogne-Billancourt-based firm claims it will be exceptionally efficient, offering more than 200 MPGe. To put that into perspective, a Nissan Leaf manages an EPA-estimated 111 MPGe on the combined cycles, while the Chevrolet Bolt gets 120 MPGe.

De Meo admitted that the upcoming Twingo EV was inspired by Japan’s kei cars, an affordable and compact class of cars that are designed according to predetermined regulations. “I think that there is some intelligence in that kind of concept, because it’s not only a product issue.”
