One possibility is that the truck has multiple pivoting floor sections that can unfold like an accordion. Another idea is that the floor extension can fold onto itself, stacking up in a pile of short boards. Yet another is that an extension can slide into and out of the regular floor, using the floor as a sort of sheath. Finally, the patent also discusses the possibility of having the floor portions stacked in a line against each other and against the truck bed bulkhead, unfolding when one needs more length.
This presents a number of possibilities to the workman on a construction site. The patent specifically mentions that this extending floor could be combined with a split tailgate, with each door housing a light that can help one to continue working when the light fads or there is no access to power on-site. Retractable bed steps are also noted for easier access to the load area, and Ford has even patented these separately, this time with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
