Some of the industry’s most venerable nameplates are among the latest finalists selected for 2024 North American Car of the Year, while North American Truck of the Year will be a showdown among key models from Ford Motor Co. and General Motors.

The awards organization used the Detroit auto show Wednesday to name 25 light vehicles, from an original field of 52, as finalists for North American car, truck and utility honors, with several electrified models in contention. And it could be an eventual sweep for Chevrolet, the only brand with vehicles in each category.

Car finalists for 2024 are the BMW 5 Series, BMW i5, Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, Ford Mustang, Honda Accord, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Crown, Toyota GR Corolla and Toyota Prius/Prius Prime. The Corvette has taken North American Car of the Year honors multiple times, while the Accord and Prius have also won.

Truck finalists — all from Detroit 3 automakers — are the Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford Ranger, Ford Super Duty and GMC Canyon.

Utility vehicle finalists are the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Dodge Hornet, Genesis Electrified GV70, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Kona, Kia EV9, Mazda CX90, Toyota Grand Highlander and Volvo EX30. The Blazer and Kona are previous winners.

Three finalists in each category will be named in Los Angeles on Nov. 16, with car, truck and utility winners announced in Detroit on Jan. 4, 2024.

A panel of 50 journalists, including Automotive News‘ engineering reporter Richard Truett, evaluates and selects the winners.
