However, significant challenges lie ahead, primarily around battery technology, since eVTOL taxis will be battery-powered, like the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
“Considering all the battery technology and all the infrastructure and regulation to come along, it’s going to take some time,” Shin said.
To recall, Hyundai tapped Rolls-Royce’s aviation division to power the eVTOL taxis. However, hydrogen power is also in the cards, particularly for long trips.
Supernal is gearing up to establish a facility in the US to produce these flying taxis. The company plans to apply for certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the coming months, emphasizing the necessity for collaboration between companies and regulators due to the nascent nature of this industry.
“There’s nothing out there – no infrastructure, no policy, no regulation,” Shin said. “Since it’s so brand new, the FAA doesn’t have an established certification method.”
