Audi stunned the world with the Le Mans Quattro concept car that appeared at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was built to celebrate the brand’s trio of wins at the 24 hours of Le Mans between 2000 and 2002. The concept later served as the basis for the production R8, and it’s rumored to have a value of $5 million, which could make it the most valuable Audi ever.
Another concept, the Avus quattro of 1991, has an aluminum space frame that previewed the mass-produced A8 sedan that arrived a few years later. This concept is said to be worth around $3 million. The same value applies to the 2000 Audi Rosemeyer concept. Although far from pretty, the Rosemeyer’s dramatic art-deco design and WR16 engine (that later found its way into the Bugatti Veyron) make it one of Audi’s craziest concepts.
As far as Audi auction records go, a 1988 Audi Sport Quattro S1 broke the record for the world’s most expensive rally car. According to Pearce & Dale, it sold for £1,771,434, the equivalent of around $2.25 million today.
