Earlier this year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recommended lowering the national speed limit citing EVs’ average size and weight. The Hummer EV, for instance, weighs over 9,000 lbs. Even so, it can get to 60 mph in three seconds, and that’s the part that scares lawmakers.
Though the bill’s fate is uncertain due to past resistance in the state legislature, New York City is currently dealing with a problematic surge in traffic fatalities that mirrors the national trend.
Senator Gounardes expressed frustration at the lack of consequences faced by these drivers. “There is a persistent cohort of drivers who are getting 5, 6, 7, 10, 15, 20 speeding tickets and driving on our streets recklessly without any consequences whatsoever,” Gounardes said. “These are the most dangerous drivers on our streets.”
