Meanwhile, underneath the sheet metal, the so-called Model 2 will reportedly use a 53 kWh battery pack with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells – cheaper to produce while also having the benefit of quicker charges and longer lifespan compared to other batteries. Musk previously went on record before saying it would operate autonomously, but we’d take that comment with a grain of salt.
Nothing’s set in stone yet, but we can expect the US-spec affordable Tesla to be produced locally to the North American continent. An upcoming factory in Mexico is a likely candidate. The Indian factory, if negotiations push through, could export the affordable model to other Asian countries where it can benefit from existing trade treaties.
Tesla has factories in Germany and China, which could also produce the cheapest Tesla for their respective regions.
