Tesla is sued by a group of 25 California counties over hazardous waste at its facilities across the state. Per Reuters, the lawsuit was filed by Los Angeles, Alameda, San Joaquin, San Francisco, and other counties on Tuesday in California state court.
The counties seek civil penalties to require Tesla to properly handle its waste in the future. Tesla is accused of “improperly labeling waste and sending the materials to landfills that cannot accept hazardous material.” Under the state’s hazardous waste management law, the EV maker could be slapped with $70,000 per violation per day.
For the world’s most valuable automaker, that may seem like weak sauce, but it could add up quickly.
