For now, Solterra owners will have to either charge at home or use Subaru’s existing partnership with EVGo. The latter has over 900 fast charging stations in more than 60 metropolitan areas, which is adequate. During the first three quarters of 2023, Subaru only sold 5,763 Solterras in the USA.
It’s a slow seller, and for good reason. The Toyota bZ4X went through a PR nightmare shortly after being introduced in the USA, which obviously tainted the Solterra. It also only has a 72.8 kWh battery, and its maximum charging capacity is 100 kW. Worse still, it’s pricier than Tesla’s Model Y.
According to Business Insider, there are only two automakers that haven’t adopted the NACS standard yet. Only Volkswagen and Stellantis are still holding out, but it’s only a matter of time. Ford was the first major automaker to announce the adoption of NACS in May 2023, which had a massive domino effect on the entire industry. If Stellantis and VW don’t join the party, they’ll be left behind, and that seems highly unlikely.
