The problem forcing the recall is that the driver’s airbag module differs between the steering wheel types. That means some Model S and Model X units could be equipped with the incorrect airbag, which could cause a malfunction when deployed, leading to a safety risk during a collision.
The bulletin covers Model S sedans produced from February 3, 2021, to September 21, 2023, and Model X crossovers produced from July 14, 2021, to September 29, 2023.
According to the NHTSA’s safety recall report, 159 vehicles are affected in the US – 30% are believed to be at risk of having the incorrect driver airbag variant installed.
