Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda Thinks The Need For EVs Is Grossly Overhyped

Toyoda addressed comments previously made in support of a BEV portfolio by claiming that “those touting BEVs tend to be people who deal only with BEVs,” suggesting that not every pro-EV remark from a Toyota executive, usually when talking of the bZ4X or other forthcoming EVs, is representative of the manufacturer’s broader stance on carbon neutrality. If people want to buy EVs, why not produce them? But to offer only EVs? Not all of us can drive trucks, or sports cars, or buses; one size rarely fits all.

He highlights that Toyota is a global automaker, and as such, it needs to cater to a worldwide audience.

“Worldwide, however, a billion people live without access to electricity. Since Toyota supplies cars to such regions, pursuing BEVs as the only option would mean we cannot provide mobility for all. That is why we are trying to keep a range of options.”
