Toyota set to show Land Cruiser Aug. 1

Toyota’s next-generation Land Cruiser SUV, set to be unveiled next week, will borrow some front styling cues from 1980s Land Cruisers. Toyota, with a cherry red Land Cruiser FJ62 used as a background prop for comparison, released another image Wednesday previewing the Land Cruiser with rectangular headlights flanking an egg-crate grille.

The Toyota badge is front and center in the grille. The blocky, chunky front fenders are similar to Toyota’s latest big trucks the Tundra and Sequoia.

A separate clip released on Toyota’s Instagram account shows a mostly flush rear liftgate. Toyota said it plans to show the Land Cruiser in Salt Lake City on Aug. 1.

The Land Cruiser, one of the first Toyotas sold in the U.S., was discontinued in 2021.

The next Land Cruiser is based on the next-generation Land Cruiser Prado, a smaller, less expensive SUV sold in overseas markets but marketed in the U.S. as the Lexus GX. The body-on-frame GX has been retooled for 2024, with boxier, upright styling.
